ACCESS CONTROL AND SECURITY SYSTEM ELECTRICAL: WHAT DFW COMMERCIAL BUILDINGS NEED

Access control and security systems are increasingly standard in DFW commercial buildings — from simple keycard door access to enterprise-grade integrated security platforms covering dozens of entry points, cameras, and intercom systems. The electrical and low voltage infrastructure behind these systems matters as much as the technology itself.

What Access Control Electrical Infrastructure Involves

An access control system is fundamentally an electrical installation. Every controlled door requires power — for the electric lock or strike, for the card reader, and for the door controller. Wiring must be run from a central power and control panel to each door location, typically in conduit for commercial applications. The power supply must be sized for all connected locks plus backup battery capacity to maintain security during a power outage.

IP-Based vs. Legacy Access Control

Modern access control systems are increasingly IP-based — running over the building’s network infrastructure rather than dedicated control wiring. Power over Ethernet (PoE) switches can power IP card readers and cameras without separate power runs, reducing cabling cost. However, the network infrastructure must be correctly specified to support the security system’s bandwidth and power requirements.

For DFW commercial buildings installing access control across multiple floors or across a campus, fiber optic backbone cabling between network closets is the correct foundation — not copper. Fiber eliminates ground loop problems that plague long copper runs in multi-building installations.

Camera System Electrical and Low Voltage

IP camera systems require structured cabling to each camera location, properly rated outdoor cabling and conduit for exterior cameras, and sufficient PoE switch capacity. Camera placement should be coordinated with the electrical plan from the beginning — not added as an afterthought requiring fishing wire through finished walls.
